Accreta Awareness Month

U.S. State Proclamations

Make your U.S. state part of Accreta Awareness Month by asking your governor to issue an official state proclamation or letter of support for October to be Accreta Awareness Month.

  • Visit your state government’s website to find out the process to make a request. Every state’s process is different, but most states require a letter explaining why it is important to recognize October as Accreta Awareness Month. See the letter template below that you can use as a starting point in reaching out to state governments for the proclamation. Some states may have additional requirements so make sure you double-check with your governor’s office to ensure you have everything you need to complete your proclamation request.

  • Your governor’s office will need time to process your request, so start early. It’s good to submit your request at least eight weeks in advance to allow time for the governor’s office to process the request.

  • If you submit a proclamation request, please let us know so we can keep track and not duplicate requests. When your proclamation has been accepted, we would love to share the news.

RE: Proclamation Request – Accreta Awareness Month

Dear [Title & Name of Elected Official - e.g. Mayor Smith, Senator Jones]

I am writing to respectfully request that you proclaim the month of October as Accreta Awareness Month in the state of [state name] or Village/City of [city name]. Your proclamation would occur in conjunction with other cities and states around the United States to promote the efforts of National Accreta Foundation in advocacy & awareness for the pregnancy condition placenta accreta spectrum.

Placenta accreta spectrum is one of the fastest growing life-threatening complications of pregnancy. It is a pregnancy condition in which the placenta attaches too deeply into the wall of the uterus. The risk for developing accreta increases with each C-section or uterine surgery. Other risk factors include placenta previa, advanced maternal age, multiparity, and curettage. The estimated incidence of placenta accreta pregnancies has quadrupled since the 1980s; the condition currently affects as many as 1 in 272 births. The rates of maternal death, transfusion, prolonged hospital stay and hysterectomy are all increased for women with accreta.

National Accreta Foundation was formed in 2017 with the focus of increasing awareness of accreta and cesarean overuse, advocating for moms and babies, and connecting patients and providers with resources to help improve quality of care. The foundation’s mission is to eliminate preventable maternal mortality and severe maternal morbidity attributable to placenta accreta.

National Accreta Foundation engages advocates like me to drive change in their communities and states. We recognize that doctors and nurses alone can't solve this problem. National Accreta Foundation has issued a national call to action to spread the word about increased rates and risk factors associated with placenta accreta, including cesarean overuse.

The recognition that would come with a proclamation from the [city or state name] would be sincerely appreciated by those of us who are driven by our personal experiences to support other women and families through what they could encounter during pregnancy.

[Optional: add your personal story or experience with placenta accreta spectrum here]

We greatly appreciate your consideration of this request. I would be honored to have your support.

Thank you and sincerely,
