For the December installment of our Accreta Expert Interview Series Dr. Daniela Carusi, MD & Dr. Kara Brown, MD joined NAF for a special live presentation on Placenta Accreta Spectrum & Maternal Mental Health followed by an interview and community Q&A. Discussion topics included medical aspects of placenta accreta as well as maternal mental health and the patient experience. We discussed the developing field of birth trauma and how to fully support women through their accreta experience.

Viewers joined via our Facebook and YouTube channels to watch the live presentation where they were able to participate by posting their own questions and comments real time throughout the live stream event.

Dr. Daniela Carusi, MD, is the Director of the Surgical Obstetrics & Abnormal Placentation Program at Brigham & Women’s Hospital and an Associate Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology & Reproductive Biology at Harvard Medical School. She has managed accreta patients since 2005 and has a history of conducting research and teaching other providers around the country about placenta accreta spectrum and postpartum hemorrhage. Dr. Carusi is a founding member on the board of the Pan American Society for the Placenta Accreta Spectrum and has been actively building the society for the past three years.

 

Dr. Kara Brown, MD, is a Reproductive Psychiatrist currently practicing at the Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System. She completed her medical school training at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and her psychiatric residency at the McGaw Medical Center of Northwestern University. She completed a fellowship in women’s mental health at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and her clinical work focused on helping women who experience birth trauma. Since relocating to New Orleans three years ago, she has served female Veterans as one of her VA’s women’s mental health champions and has continued teaching efforts with trainees at Tulane’s Psychiatry, OBGYN, and Internal Medicine departments.

In October 2021 in honor of Accreta Awareness Month, Dr. Brett Einerson, MD MPH joined NAF for an engaging live presentation on placenta accreta spectrum followed by an interview and community Q&A. Discussion topics included who is at risk of accreta, the importance of pre-delivery diagnosis, why you should get a second opinion and how better outcomes are achieved by receiving care from a multidisciplinary team at a hospital that has experience treating accreta.
